Aamir Khan has finally spoken up about the criticism surrounding his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, which many have accused of being a scene-by-scene remake of the Spanish film Champions.
After facing flak for Laal Singh Chaddha, a remake of Forrest Gump, Aamir’s decision to remake another film has sparked debate online.
On Raj Shamani’s podcast, Aamir addressed the trolls head-on, saying, “Main thoda pagal type ka aadmi hun, practical cheezein mujhe samajh mein nahi aati.”
He was being defiant and creative. He dismissed the idea that remakes kill originality, saying, “Mujhe nahi lagta hai meri creativity kum ho rahi hai. Kisi aur ne kahani banayi hai, ab main apna nazariya de raha hun.”
He referenced Shakespeare and his own work in Ghajini—also a remake—and drew a clear line between imitation and interpretation.
He believes a remake becomes a new story when seen through a new creative lens.
While the industry walks the tightrope between originality and adaptation, Aamir’s unapologetic stance raises questions about the definition of creativity in cinema.
With Sitaare Zameen Par releasing on June 20 and Genelia D’Souza in the lead, all eyes are now on whether the audience will accept Aamir’s point of view or once again question the fine line between tribute and over-reliance on existing stories.
