Bollywood Clueless About Gen Z? Flop Film Exposes All

Bollywood has made several attempts to portray youth culture and the impact of the internet. Despite these efforts, the industry has largely failed to capture what being Gen Z truly feels like. Most portrayals appear disconnected from real digital life.

Films and shows such as CTRL, Call Me Bae, Loveyapa, and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan tried to explore social media and internet culture. However, they often fail to feel fully relevant. The depictions lean towards exaggeration.

While Kho Gaye Hum Kahan made a sincere attempt, it did not completely capture the emotional reality of today’s digital-first generation. Many such films feel written from an older perspective. The dialogues and online interactions come across as forced or outdated.

The language used in these portrayals often feels unnatural. Conversations sound more millennial or boomer-coded than Gen Z. Real-life youth do not communicate in exaggerated hashtags or performative slang.

In contrast, the recently released Tu Yaa Main, directed by Bijoy Nambiar, gets the tone right. The film understands the mindset of young creators navigating the internet. It reflects the emotional and psychological reality of being online.

The story captures the urge to create content, chase visibility, and seek validation through likes. The Gen Z sensibility flows naturally through the dialogues. Nothing feels forced, exaggerated, or artificial.

Writer Abhishek Bandekar, along with Himanshu Sharma, maintains a consistent youthful voice throughout the screenplay. Their work ensures authenticity in tone and character behaviour.

Bijoy Nambiar’s direction further strengthens the narrative. He effectively portrays the evolving bond between two creators who turn into a couple. The music complements the story and adds a cool, distinctly Gen Z atmosphere.

Although Tu Yaa Main did not perform well at the box office and ended up as a commercial disappointment, its portrayal of youth culture stands out. It offers valuable lessons for Bollywood on how to represent Gen Z with honesty and relevance.
