Roopbani Cinema owner Vishek Chauhan has raised questions about the number of people who visited theatres last year. He asked whether 83 crore people really watched films on the big screen. If true, India would have become one of the biggest cinema markets, surpassing the US and China in footfalls.
In a recent tweet, Chauhan pointed to estimates that claimed 83.2 crore admissions and a box office collection of Rs. 13,395 crores from nearly 9,700 screens. He said these numbers were not actual counts. According to him, they were calculated using a formula.
Vishek explained that the method is simple. Box office collections are divided by assumed ticket prices to estimate footfalls. If the ticket price assumption changes, the admission numbers also change. This raises doubts about the accuracy of the widely circulated figures.
He further clarified that 83 crore admissions are possible only if the average ticket price is around Rs. 161. If ticket prices are increased even slightly, the gap becomes large. This calculation suggests that the real admission numbers may be far lower.
Based on his estimates, Vishek believes actual footfalls could be around 55 to 60 crores. This is significantly lower than the reported figure of 83 crores. He questioned why theatres are facing financial stress if admissions are truly that high.
The discussion quickly sparked reactions on social media. Many netizens criticised the formula used to estimate admissions. Some claimed that such calculations indirectly encourage block bookings and inflated box office figures when films fail at the theatres.
Trade experts also joined the conversation about falling admissions. Several of them pointed out that rising ticket prices are one of the main reasons. They suggested that theatres should maintain moderate prices, especially after the first weekend, and continue the same for the following weeks.
A few critics also blamed weak content for the situation. Many films generate huge hype before release but fail to satisfy audiences later. This pattern has slowly reduced the excitement of watching movies in theatres.
However, many cinema lovers remain hopeful about the future. They believe the situation can improve gradually. Vishek Chauhan’s comments have once again highlighted the challenges theatres face and why their survival remains important for the film industry.
