Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were reportedly “pretty nervous” as they were pursued by paparazzi during their recent visit to New York City. An Indian-American cab driver named Sukhcharn Singh had the opportunity to drive the couple for a brief period after picking them up at a police station in Manhattan. Singh mentioned that he instantly recognized his famous passengers when a security guard hailed his cab on 67th Street.

During their short ride, their car got blocked by a garbage truck, and paparazzi quickly surrounded them, taking pictures. Singh shared that Harry and Meghan seemed anxious and revealed that they were about to provide him with their destination but decided to return to the police station instead. The couple’s spokesperson later referred to the incident as a “near catastrophic car chase,” emphasizing the challenges posed by numerous photographers.

While the New York Police Department confirmed their assistance to the private security team protecting Harry and Meghan, they reported no collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests. The couple had been attending an awards ceremony, the Ms Foundation Women of Vision Awards, accompanied by Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. After leaving the event, they attempted to evade the paparazzi by seeking refuge at a Manhattan police station, where Singh picked them up.

Singh dismissed the notion of a “near catastrophic car chase,” considering it an exaggeration. He stated that neither he nor the passengers felt endangered, as New York City is considered a safe place with police personnel on every corner. According to Singh’s account, he drove Harry, Meghan, Meghan’s mother, and a security guard for about 10 minutes while being pursued by two vehicles driven by photographers.

The incident drew criticism from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who described it as “reckless and irresponsible.” He emphasized the importance of public safety and the potential risks of high-speed chases in a densely populated city like New York. The mayor drew attention to the tragic death of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, who was pursued by paparazzi and died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson expressed concern over the dissemination of images obtained through such intrusive practices, emphasizing the need to prioritize everyone’s safety. The couple’s decision to step back from their royal duties in 2020 and move to the United States was partly influenced by the intense media scrutiny they faced. Harry has consistently condemned press intrusion, holding it responsible for his mother’s untimely demise and advocating for privacy and protection from harassment.
