Virat Kohli in SC Plan: Cracker Free Diwali?

The Supreme Court has suggested involving Indian cricketer Virat Kohli in a public awareness campaign to encourage people to celebrate Diwali without firecrackers.

The suggestion came during a hearing on petitions related to firecracker pollution and restrictions in Delhi NCR. A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale discussed involving popular sportspersons and public figures to spread awareness among people.

Justice Sundresh suggested that authorities could approach Kohli or other celebrated cricketers to record a short awareness segment asking people to enjoy Diwali without firecrackers.

The court believes that messages from respected personalities could help people understand the need to reduce pollution during the festival.

The bench also observed that its repeated orders to control pollution had become almost academic as violations continued.

It questioned the authorities about the enforcement of existing restrictions and asked for details of inspections and action against illegal firecracker sales.

During the hearing, amicus curiae Aparajita Singh highlighted the harmful effects of firecrackers, including the release of toxic gases and PM2.5 particles.

She also raised concerns about products being sold as green crackers without proper verification. She argued that even genuine green crackers cause pollution and are not completely safe.

The petitioners sought a complete ban on firecracker manufacturing, while manufacturers opposed a blanket ban, arguing that it could increase black market sales and the smuggling of illegal products.

The Supreme Court said it was not inclined to impose a complete ban at this stage. It warned that poor enforcement of existing restrictions could force it to take a stricter stand.

The court also suggested educating children about the effects of firecracker pollution. It said the issue of permissible barium content in firecrackers would be taken up after Diwali.
