“If Avatar 3 Flops, I Will Shut Down the Franchise”

As Avatar: Fire and Ash prepares for its December 19, 2025 release, director James Cameron has revealed the uncertain future of the franchise. In a chat with The Town podcast, the 71 year old filmmaker said the huge budget of Avatar 3 requires double the earnings just to break even.

After spending almost three decades building the Pandora universe, James stated that if the film flops and fails to secure approval for parts 4 and 5, he will walk away from the franchise. He added, “I’ve been in Avatar land for 20 years… If this is where it ends, cool”. He also said he would prefer finishing the story in a book rather than handing the franchise to someone else.

The first two films earned over 5.2 billion dollars globally, but James admitted he is anxious about the upcoming release. Rising VFX costs and the shifting streaming landscape have added more pressure.

After his comments went viral, fan reactions on social media became divided. Many longtime fans urged people to watch the film in theatres to ensure more sequels. Others criticised the franchise fatigue that has taken over Hollywood, similar to Bollywood, and argued that no one asked for five Avatar films.

Some critics felt the fatigue was already visible in the second film. They said it was technically impressive but lacked re watch value. They also suggested that Hollywood should focus on new alien stories instead of stretching the same universe.

With James placing the franchise’s future on the performance of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the global audience is now left wondering whether fans will support it for the sake of future sequels or let the franchise stand on its own.
