Throughout its six-day run, Madame Web smashes the 22-year-old Sony The Amazing Spider-Man box office record. Since the premiere of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in 2002, the Sony Spider-Man universe (SSU) has seen several profitable opening weekends, notably Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, which grossed $260.1 million domestically.
Despite being part of the SSU, the movie Madame Web is based on the iconic superhero. Madame Web earned $25.8 million domestically throughout its six-day run, including $17.6 million on the average three-day opening weekend. Madame Web has officially had the worst opening in SSU history, earning less than the critically panned Morbius’ $39 million in three days.
Madame Web, a Sony picture, had a disappointing debut due to a bad marketing effort and a cringeworthy sentence in the trailer. During the press tour, star Dakota Johnson disclosed “drastic changes” to the original tale. Despite these challenges, promotional materials contained glimpses of the Spider-Women in their distinctive outfits, disappointing people anticipating the film.
Madame Web now has a 13% critical score and a 54% audience score on the website Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its dismal result, the picture can rebound from a terrible opening weekend with positive reviews and word-of-mouth. Given the film’s low success, a follow-up with the Spider-Women in costume seems unlikely right now.
