The “Hype Meter” for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was surprisingly low for a while. Usually, a Nolan project feels like a global emergency from day one, but this time, he kept the set so locked down it almost felt quiet. That ended today.
The trailer is a masterclass in “The Nolan Mark.” Instead of a generic CGI sword-and-sandal epic, he has delivered something that looks like it was shot on another planet. Shooting entirely on 70mm IMAX has given the visuals a weight that makes other “big” films look like YouTube sketches.
The casting is where the real noise is. Matt Damon looks exhausted and lethal as Odysseus, but the real talk is about Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson. Nolan has a way of stripping the “Marvel” or “Twilight” out of actors and leaving only the grit.
By starting the story at the end and jumping back through the Trojan War, he is bringing his trademark non-linear mind-games to ancient Greece. It’s no longer just a “history movie.” It’s a puzzle that requires an IMAX screen to solve.
If anyone was worried that Nolan had lost his touch, the Odyssey trailer just silenced them. In a year where even Hollywood felt a bit “dull,” the king has reclaimed his throne. July 17th can’t come soon enough.
