Indian anime fans are up for a treat as Warner Bros. recently announced that the Oscar-winning animated movie “The Boy and the Heron” is finally set to release in India after its debut over nine months ago. The movie will be released in both Japanese with English subtitles and in English dubbing for the Indian audience.
The movie holds a rather important place in the hearts of both the fans and the animators as Hayao Miyazaki stepped out of his retirement for this project. A blend of autobiographical and fantastical elements, the movie follows the story of a young boy, Mahito Maki, who loses his mother in a fire and now has to cope with the same. The story shifts when the boy meets a grey Heron who becomes his guide and companion in his loss.
The movie is set in the backdrop of World War II Japan and showcases a wide array of themes pertaining to loss, childhood sensibilities, grim undertones of WWII, and interpersonal relations. All served to the audience through a lens of fantasy. It also has a star-studded cast with names like Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson (who made his voice acting debut) embellishing the English version. As of now there are no dubs available in any Indian language.
