Gladiator 2’s budget is said to have grown above its original $165 million budget, reaching levels only seen in blockbusters like Avengers: Infinity War. Returning to helm a follow-up to his beloved historical epic from 2000, Ridley Scott centers on an adult Lucius (Paul Mescal).
The next Gladiator sequel’s budget grew dramatically during production, going from an initial $165 million to $310 million. The $10 million increase in budget is attributed to the Hollywood strikes; however, it appears that the remaining funds were added during production.
Gladiator 2 has been associated with the Humane Society despite several obstacles, such as claims of animal mistreatment and burn injuries. The amount of detail included in the tale and characters has resulted in the film’s budget nearly doubling despite these happenings. Although the Humane Society was present during filming, the $310 million production budget does not include marketing expenses.
Gladiator 2 may need to gross $700 million to break even, assuming the conventional wisdom that a marketing expense doubles the budget and the theatrical cut. Whether Gladiator 2 will be able to recoup its enormous cost depends on how well big-budget films do in 2024.
