From 90s To EPIC: Aditya Haasan Drops The Filter

Aditya Haasan created a strong identity with 90s – A Middle Class Biopic, a story built around a middle-class family, everyday struggles and emotions that worked because of their simplicity. But the trailer of EPIC – First Semester shows a very different side of the filmmaker.

The surprise is not just that Aditya has moved into a youth-oriented love story. His writing itself appears far more unfiltered. The trailer features blunt relationship conversations, intimate themes and cuss words, creating a tone that is a long way from the restrained family world audiences associated with 90s.

That makes EPIC an interesting test for Aditya. He is no longer operating inside the comfort zone that established him. Instead, he is dealing with young characters in London, relationships, intimacy, break-ups and the emotional confusion that comes with growing up.

Interestingly, Aditya himself acknowledged that viewers could experience a cultural shift after watching EPIC. He also made it clear that the bold elements were not inserted simply for shock value and that there is emotional depth underneath them.

That is where the film will ultimately be judged. The language may grab attention, but Aditya has to prove that the rawness belongs to the characters and the story rather than functioning as a promotional hook.

90s showed what Aditya could do with innocence and everyday emotions. EPIC now tests how far he can stretch that writing style without losing the natural connect that made his earlier work stand out.
