Advance Booking: Check Placed Comfortably For Jump

This week’s new releases are Nithiin’s Check and a small film Akshara. They are the two major releases. Among the two, Check gets a bigger release, but it is expected. It is placed comfortably for a jump.

Check stars a big name like Nithiin, but the shows are not huge like his previous film Bheeshma. The reason being Check’ genre, it is not a commercial fare in a typical larger than life way. It is a thriller, and that too, with a unique backdrop involving jail and chess. Also, the director Chandra Sekhar Yeleti, despite his critic friendly films (some being amazing), is not a box office puller as a brand.

The initial response is very low, predictably, and a lot depends on the word of mouth it generates from the early shows in the US and the Telugu states. Check is the first noticeable movie after the resumption of films (post-pandemic) to have a low-key response.

In the US, Check has been given an extensive release. It is the widest so far, post-pandemic. If Check has a good talk, things can turn around from here itself.

Akshara, on the other hand, is purely a word of mouth film. If it’s good, it can show a decent uptick given its expected weak openings. The limited screens, overall, doesn’t help the cause either.

The holdover releases will have another weekend to make a mark. Uppena will be the front leader. Naandhi will follow it. These two, along with new releases, will constitute the overall revenue for the weekend.
