AR Rahman’s Cheliyaa Song – Copycat or Not?

AR Rahman has always been known for his wonderful musical compositions but this time he is in the news for an entirely different reason. Rahman is currently getting a lot of negative media attention over his song from Mani Ratnam’s latest project Cheliyaa (Katru Veliyidai in Tamil). As it so happens, the song’s music bears a strong resemblance to a tune composed by Mohan Sithara four years ago.

Even as the debate over the issue continues on social media, Sithara himself has taken quite a neutral stand. Sithara has spoken out about the unfortunate incident and said that although nobody had taken his permission, it could all be a misunderstanding. Giving Rahman the benefit of doubt, Sithara has said that he is a great music director and this could just be a case of misunderstanding.

Others, however, continue to debate whether both directors had drawn inspiration from a folk song or whether Rahman had taken inspiration from Sithara’s tune!
