August turned out to be a month of extreme contrasts at the box office. There were genuine successes, unexpected winners, decent performers, and some embarrassing failures. But one film completely changed the narrative. Ravi Teja’s Irumudi emerged as the undisputed winner, delivering a blockbuster run that nobody saw coming.

The month actually started on a positive note for Varun Tej. Korean Kanakaraju gave him a much-needed success in the first week and ended his success drought. The film may not have been a massive blockbuster, but its performance brought some much-needed cheer to Varun and his fans. At a time when he badly needed theatrical success, Korean Kanakaraju gave him exactly that.

The second week produced two interesting success stories. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s acting debut DC turned into an unexpected box-office success, performing far beyond initial expectations.

Suriya’s Vishwanath And Sons also delivered an encouraging result. Released as an Independence Day special, the film gave director Venky Atluri a hat-trick and became a particularly interesting case because it was made in Tamil but received an even stronger response from Telugu audiences. The Telugu version turned into a big hit, while the Tamil market was comparatively weaker.

Even the small film Husharu Pittalu found its audience, especially in B and C centres, with its sleazy content helping it bring in decent money.

Then came the third week, and Ravi Teja simply blew the competition away.

Irumudi has turned into a sensational blockbuster and is now nearing the Rs. 100 crores worldwide share mark. More importantly, the film has generated unimaginable profits for almost everyone involved in the trade. The response has been extraordinary across centres, and its momentum is so strong that it is expected to continue running at least until The Paradise arrives.

For Ravi Teja, this is more than another hit. After a terrible run of films, Irumudi has completely changed the atmosphere around him and given him the kind of comeback that can revive his career. The kind of run it is having at the box office is simply historic and has not been seen in a very long time.

But the final week brought the biggest disappointment of the month.

Yash’s Toxic arrived with enormous expectations of being the next massive pan-India event film. Instead, the film collapsed after release and turned into an epic disaster. The Telugu business makes the situation even worse. Dil Raju reportedly committed around Rs. 75 crores as an advance for the Telugu states, meaning the film needed roughly Rs. 160 crores gross to reach break-even. It managed only around Rs. 38 crores in its first weekend, leaving the distributors staring at a huge loss.

That makes Toxic the biggest irony of August. The month had already produced multiple successful films, but the biggest and most heavily hyped release ended up being the biggest failure. The 94% crash Toxic saw at the box office on its first Monday is also historic.

The smaller films did not have much luck either. KJQ, MS Raju’s Agadha, Ameer Log, and Makutam failed to pull significant audiences into theatres. Nayanthara’s Hi also flopped as its outdated content failed to create much excitement.

Varun Tej got the relief he needed. DC delivered a surprise and strengthened the brand of Lokesh Kanagaraj. Suriya and Venky Atluri continued their successful run. Even a small film like Husharu Pittalu found its market.

And then Irumudi completely exploded, turning Ravi Teja’s comeback into one of the biggest success stories of the year. At the other end, Toxic arrived with the biggest expectations and emerged as a spine-breaking disaster for all concerned.

Both Ravi Teja and Yash created history in August, but in completely opposite ways.
