Tummidihatti Project Sparks Debate
Telangana’s Tummidihatti project has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the Congress government and the BRS. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy‘s meeting with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has opened the door for renewed negotiations, but Harish Rao has questioned why it took nearly three years to reach this stage.
The key outcome is a proposed joint committee of officials from both states to examine the barrage height, water availability, submergence and compensation. Maharashtra has indicated a willingness to reconsider the existing 148-metre agreement, provided its interests are protected. However, a committee is only a first step, not a final breakthrough.
Harish Rao claims the BRS government initiated talks with Maharashtra within 42 days of coming to power. He has also challenged Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy to prove that water can flow by gravity from Tummidihatti to Ellampalli, offering to resign if the claim is established.
His challenge puts the spotlight on the project’s most critical question: Can the proposed design deliver water economically and technically as promised? Harish Rao’s comparison with Chandrababu Naidu bringing Krishna waters to Kuppam adds pressure on the Congress government. But comparisons mean little unless Telangana can overcome its own engineering and interstate coordination challenges.
Ultimately, Tummidihatti is bigger than a confrontation between Congress and BRS. It is a test of whether Telangana can resolve an interstate water dispute through negotiation, sound engineering and sustained execution. Revanth Reddy has opened a new channel of dialogue with Maharashtra. Harish Rao has put the government under pressure to prove that the initiative will deliver results.
The real victory will not be another political exchange. It will be water reaching the fields of Adilabad, at a sustainable cost, after decades of promises.
