The film industry has witnessed the arrival of multiple blockbusters in the next few years. Rs. 500 crores became a common thing for high-budget projects. The number slowly went up, with Rs. 1,000 crores being the particular mark that everyone aimed to achieve.
But these numbers were possible for one particular reason – footfalls. For the unversed, the term basically refers to the number of people who watched the film in theatres, similar to the ticket sales.
Irrespective of the film’s content, a lot of films recorded the best footfalls with outstanding numbers. Let’s check the ten best ones from the list.
1) Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
People wanted to see improvement in S.S. Rajamouli’s presentation in the sequel. The trailer hinted at masala entertainment. Iconic scenes were created. The entry of Prabhas, the intense confrontation with Rana Daggubati. People have not forgotten anything until today. The recorded footfalls were said to be Rs. 10.77 crores.
2) Pushpa 2: The Rule
The Icon Star was the same since he entered films. He displayed a lot of style. He added it to action and dance, which received so much love. This time, the footfalls were almost Rs. 6.12 crores. With tobacco in his mouth, Allu Arjun looked different. The tucked-in shirt and sunglasses took things to a new level, and Fahadh Faasil came in for an extraordinary confrontation.
3) K.G.F. Chapter 2
Smuggling stories have been common. But Prashanth Neel added a unique angle this time – Kolar Gold Fields. A little boy who had struggled since childhood obtained power and took over the land of gold. But assassinating the previous owner brings more trouble for him in the form of Adheera. Rocking Star Yash’s presence guaranteed the attraction of huge crowds. Moreover, footfalls were reported to be almost Rs. 5.06 crores.
4) Baahubali: The Beginning
A magnum opus experience was guaranteed from the first look. There were large and beautiful waterfalls. On the other hand, a fictional kingdom with a ruthless king. He comes face-to-face with someone born outside the kingdom. There is some connection between the duo. Audiences went in with a lot of expectations, which were fulfilled due to the entertaining content. The recorded footfalls were around Rs. 4.08 crores.
5) RRR
Fans kept on waiting despite multiple delays. The pandemic was seemingly not willing to end. There was a fear that theatres would remain closed forever. But life returned to normal. A new date was fixed. No one wanted to miss a commercial entertainer. Rajamouli also changed other things to attract the audience. Two international stars were cast as villains. This contributed to footfalls of Rs. 4.51 crores.
6) Kalki 2898 AD
The word pan-India is now applicable to those projects that witness the presence of big superstars from all languages. Karan Johar attempted the same a few years ago with Liger, which failed. But no risks were taken with Prabhas. There were two legends – Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. The cameos by popular faces also helped to attract crowds. The overall footfalls were reported to be Rs. 3.61 crores.
7) Indian
S. Shankar has always chosen some unique subjects. Corruption has been a common theme for many filmmakers. But the popular director decided to bring a completely different experience with this concept. Kamal Haasan was already a well-known face by then. Despite a lengthy runtime, the film connected with the audience through its amazing action scenes and certain emotional moments. It was a big hit, with footfalls of almost Rs. 3.40 crores.
8) 2.0
Some sequels spend a long time in production. Viewers get frustrated. However, this works in favour of the film. The follow-up to Enthiran was one of them. It kept getting delayed. But the audience let go of their anger when Super Star Rajinikanth arrived on the big screen. Robots and science fiction. The theme was for the classes. However, the overall execution impressed the masses, with footfalls reported to be Rs. 3.38 crores.
9) Chandra
While the option of dubbing has been common for most filmmakers, some decided to shoot in two different languages. It was a simple love story where a princess and a music teacher fell for each other. But there are certain complications. Whether the lovers reunite in the end is what the film focuses on. Chandra was an example of how simplicity can leave a positive impression. The footfalls of Rs. 3.04 crores also proved the same.
10) Endhiran
It was a common belief that India could never make a film like Terminator. But S. Shankar proved everyone wrong. Since there was Super Star Rajinikanth in the lead, the director opted to go for a dual role, making one of them choose the negative side for a brief period. The entire combination was impressive in terms of visuals, specifically the chase between robots and humans in the climax. The reported footfalls were almost Rs. 3.01 crores.
Similar projects are being planned by big studios. The release dates are not fixed yet. But the expectations are sky-high due to the initial hype that has been created. Prabhas already has Spirit, Salaar 2, and Kalki 2 in his hands. Then there is S.S. Rajamouli’s SSMB29 with Mahesh Babu, followed by Nelson’s Jailer 2.
With a lot of money being invested in filming and post-production work to bring a unique experience every time, let’s wait and see who will be the next to break the records in terms of footfalls.
