Late to the Party, Lost at the Box Office!

A blockbuster in one language creates curiosity in other markets, but that excitement doesn’t last forever. The Telugu releases of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit and Hanuman Ansh show how difficult it can be to convert original-language success into box office numbers elsewhere.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit became a major Malayalam hit, raising expectations for its Telugu version. Released roughly two weeks later, the dubbed film failed to create the expected impact. Its Malayalam success generated curiosity, but that wasn’t enough to draw Telugu audiences to theatres.

The story of Hanuman Ansh was even more striking. The Hindi film reportedly collected around Rs 400 crore, creating hopes of a similar reception in Telugu. However, its dubbed version arrived nearly two months later. By then, much of the initial buzz had faded. Despite positive reviews from critics, the film struggled to attract audiences.

The bigger problem is that makers often wait for a film to become a proven hit before bringing it to other languages. By then, the excitement may have died down. Audiences might have already watched the original or lost interest in checking out a film they have been hearing about for weeks.

Of course, a late release alone cannot explain every failure. The film also needs to connect with Telugu audiences, and promotions have to create a reason to watch it in theatres. But relying entirely on the original version’s success is a risky move.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit and Hanuman Ansh make one thing clear: a film’s success elsewhere can open doors in Telugu, but it cannot guarantee ticket sales. The trick is to bring the film when people are still talking about it, not when the buzz has moved on.
