BO Red Flag: Bigger Budgets Making Indian Cinema Worse

When audiences hear about big budget films costing thousands of crores, many assume a larger budget means a better film. However, the reality is often different. High spending does not always guarantee creativity or strong storytelling.

Announcements about film companies mounting projects with massive budgets often create excitement. It appears as if Indian cinema is entering a financially strong phase. But a closer look shows that the situation is more complicated.

Many recent production houses behind these large budget films were started by second generation film personalities. They aimed to build their own creative identity. Their goal was to make cinema they truly believed in.

However, funding such ambitious projects often requires large loans from corporate investors. This dependence on external finance suggests the industry is under pressure. Financial risks have become a major concern for production companies.

When companies raise huge amounts of money, repayment pressure becomes unavoidable. Corporate expectations begin to influence creative decisions. Profitability slowly becomes more important than originality.

As a result, many filmmakers choose safer options. Mass action films, sequels built on nostalgia, and strongly patriotic stories are often preferred. These genres are seen as more reliable at the box office.

Over time, the original creative vision behind such production houses can fade. Generic cinema becomes more common, while experimentation reduces. The industry begins to prioritise financial safety over artistic risk.

So when a film is announced with a 1000 crore budget, it does not automatically mean the film will be great. It also does not guarantee a golden phase for Indian cinema. Sometimes, it reflects the struggle of creative voices trying to survive within financial limits.
