Weekend BO: Kurup Dominates All

Three movies were released in cinemas this weekend. Two were straight Telugu movies, Pushpaka Vimanam and Raja Vikramarka, and the other is the Malayalam dub, Kurup. Easily the Malayalam movie is dominating all and everywhere.

In Telugu, the local movies Raja Vikramarka and Pushpaka Vimanam were expected to dominate, but unfortunately, the poor word of mouth had an instant impact. Would you believe Pushpaka Vimanam had lower numbers than Kurup in Telugu states itself? Raja Vikramarka was better, but only marginally.

In the US, it was the opposite, with Pushpaka Vimanam ($47 K) coming ahead of Raja Vikramarka ($18 K), but, again, both were lower than Dulquer Salmaan’s Kurup ($91 K). The numbers are premieres and the first day (Friday) combined.

On the second day, the margin between the Pushpaka Vimanam, Raja Vikramarka and Kurup is only expected to increase.

Coming to the original version, the Dulquer Salmaan starrer Kurup has taken the biggest opening ever for a Malayalam movie in Kerala. It bettered the previous best record held by Mohan Lal’s Odiyan. Incidentally, it is the first biggie to hit cinemas in Kerala post the resumption of theatrical screenings after the second wave.

Not only in Kerala, but the same is also true everywhere. Whether Gulf, Tamil Nadu or the US, Kurup is earth-shattering everywhere (for a Malayalam biggie). With a positive talk, it is expected to reap hugely at the box office and revive the Malayalam cinema.
