The debate surrounding movie reviews and the audience is a never-ending topic. Every time a film underperforms, discussions about reviewers and social media negativity will come to the fore.
Filmmakers will start pointing fingers towards reviewers and push blame on them. This raises a simple question: if honest feedback is welcome, why should honest reviews become a problem? This selective acceptance creates confusion.
When reviews are positive, it will be showcased on posters, trailers, and social media with captions like “Blockbuster Response,” “Excellent Reviews,” and “Must Watch.” The same filmmakers proudly thank critics and audiences for their appreciation. But when reviews are negative, the narrative changes overnight. Suddenly, reviewers become easy targets and are accused of damaging films. Some even argue that audiences are being influenced by ratings instead of watching the film themselves.
The reality, however, is much simpler. Reviews are opinions-not verdicts.
A positive review doesn’t guarantee a blockbuster, just as a negative review alone cannot sink a genuinely entertaining film. Audiences ultimately decide a film’s fate through word of mouth and their own viewing experience. Accepting criticism with maturity is what truly defines a filmmaker.
The industry’s credibility will only grow when it embraces feedback consistently.
