Can Suriya Provide Some BO Relief Before Peddi Arrives?

Tollywood box office’s terrible run continued last Friday as theatres across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana witnessed shockingly poor occupancy. According to trade circles, the biggest reason is the absence of star-driven films and the lack of excitement around current releases. Films like Godari Gattupaina, Razor, and Sathi Leelavathi failed to generate even bare minimum openings, leaving exhibitors struggling badly.

Trade experts believe weak content, low audience urgency, changing viewing habits, OTT growth, and piracy are now affecting theatrical business more than seasonal factors like summer heat or the IPL. More importantly, Tollywood completely failed to capitalize on the summer season this year, which is traditionally considered one of the most profitable periods for Telugu cinema because of school holidays and strong family audience turnout.

No top Telugu star film arrived during the peak summer window, while medium-budget and smaller films failed to create any momentum at the box office. As a result, theatres across the Telugu states have been witnessing extremely poor occupancy for several weeks.

In this backdrop, Suriya’s Karuppu, releasing in Telugu as Veerabhadrudu, suddenly becomes an important film for exhibitors before Peddi arrives on June 4. Directed by RJ Balaji and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film currently has one major advantage: almost zero competition.

But the challenges are equally clear.

Apart from Suriya and Trisha, the rest of the cast doesn’t have much appeal for Telugu audiences. The trailer also failed to create any excitement, with many viewers feeling it looked like a routine Tamil commercial entertainer rather than something fresh enough to pull Telugu crowds into theatres.

Annapurna Studios is handling the Telugu release, and there are still a couple of days left for promotions to improve visibility. Right now, however, the pre-release buzz remains quite low.

Still, theatres are so desperate for content at the moment that even a moderately promoted film can attract attention. With no major releases arriving immediately, Veerabhadrudu may at least provide temporary relief to exhibitors struggling to survive until Peddi finally arrives in theatres.
