Dhurandhar is quietly becoming a masterclass in how to grow a film slowly and sustainably in a market like North America without hype gimmicks, inflated pricing, or desperate record marketing.
On Day 3 in the United States alone, advance sales hit Rs. 238,449. Day 2 alone is projected to have touched Rs. 900K to Rs. 1 million, making it the biggest Saturday for any Indian film in North America this year.
So, what is driving this surge?
Not premieres.
Not inflated IMAX pricing.
Not $25 to $35 premiere shows.
Just strong content and simple and fair $13 ticket pricing with good number of screens.
Audiences feel they are getting value for what they are paying, and that is pulling them back into theatres not just on Day 1 but across the weekend. Meanwhile, many Telugu and South releases continue relying heavily on massive openings with premium pricing and limited screens, hoping to cash out before word-of-mouth settles.
The difference in audience behavior is now impossible to ignore. Bollywood films like Dhurandhar are built for legs, slow buildup, steady occupancy, and repeat value. South Indian films, especially recent ones, are built for impact, big Day 1, then a sharp drop unless the talk is exceptional.
A perfect example is Baahubali 2. It earned slightly more than Pathaan in the United States in terms of revenue. But in actual footfalls, Pathaan achieved more than 50% of Baahubali 2’s audience count, despite being Shah Rukh Khan’s usual commercial entertainer and not a gigantic visual epic. The reason was affordable ticket prices.
In fact, the way Dhurandhar is tracking, it will outperform almost every South Indian release in North America this year in sheer footfalls, not just revenue. And here is the reality check.
If Bollywood ever starts opening films domestically at Rs. 100 crore net on Day 1 with this kind of overseas pull, many of their films could comfortably land in the Rs. 600 to 700 crore net lifetime range. Their ecosystem supports a sustained run, not just opening day euphoria.
So the next time someone casually tweets, “Ranveer Singh cannot match even a Telugu tier 2 star opening,” ask them one simple question.
What happens after Day 1, both in India and overseas?
There is a lot to take away from Dhurandhar’s run in the US as it is happening right now in front of our eyes. Dhurandhar is showing the Telugu industry how audiences behave right now in real time.
