The year 2025 has turned into a wake up call for producers planning more sequels. Box office results show that franchise popularity alone cannot help a film unless it has a strong script. Audiences are no longer accepting weak follow ups.
Even Ajay Devgn, known for sequels, could not deliver consistent results. Raid 2 managed to stay afloat, but Son of Sardaar 2 failed badly. De De Pyaar De 2 is also heading towards a flop with collections of only Rs. 65 to 70 crores.
Sajid Nadiadwala’s Housefull series also faced a big setback. The latest film collected Rs. 161 crores, much lower than Housefull 2, which made Rs. 205 crores. His Baaghi franchise met a similar end, as the recent part closed at Rs. 67 crores. Baaghi 3 had collected Rs. 90 crores despite releasing close to the lockdown.
War 2 added to the disappointment. After six years of waiting, the audience sat through a tiring three hour experience. Its opening was lower than the first film and it ended as another flop.
Mastii 4 is set to release this Friday. But early booking numbers suggest that the film may struggle to take a strong opening at the box office.
Moviegoers, who were silent for a long time, are now openly expressing frustration. Many feel there are not enough original stories. Some even called certain sequels unnecessary while sharing their thoughts online.
The industry clearly needs better writers. Original films are releasing, but high budgets and limited promotions are reducing the buzz. Viewers want fresh ideas rather than repetitive formulas.
With several films lined up for next year, makers might finally step back from sequels after facing heavy losses. Whether these setbacks are enough for them to change remains uncertain. Time will tell what happens next.
