Food safety in Hyderabad under scanner!

The safety of food in Hyderabad is under scanner with the Bonalu and Ramzan festivals. City people are preferring to eat out in hotels in the festive times. However the health of the people seems to be in air with several hotels in the city do not have the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) stamp of approval. There are as many as 15000 hotels in the city but only two health inspectors who are expected to check the food quality in all the eateries and ensure they maintain proper standards of hygiene and food quality.

There are close to 5,800 registered eateries in the city while unregistered hotels number up to 10,000.With the onset of Monsoon, there are chances of water borne diseases outbreak and hence there is a need to increase the food inspectors to 10-15. Also the work of the food inspectors have come under scanner with many corruption allegations like money and free food in return for a health and sanitation certificate.
