It is quite common that people bring TVs (LED/LCD/Plasma) to India when you visit foreign countries and save some bucks. There are several instances we see on a flight from Bangkok/Singapore, there are more number of TVs than passengers. Till 26th August, these TVs (not more than 40 inches) are considered as baggage and are not taxable.
But in the wake of abnormal falling of Rupee, Government of India decided to levy customs duty on any flat screen TV being brought to India to arrest free falling of rupee. A whopping 36.05% custom duty is levied on TVs. Also the prices in Indian market are considered for this taxation. So, people planning to bring TVs to India have to think twice before doing that. You may have to shell higher price than that of Indian rates.
