Another Big Blow to Ilaiyaraaja: Unexpected Twist

Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja has faced another setback in an ongoing copyright dispute. This comes months after his legal loss against Saregama. The latest development has once again brought his legal battles into public discussion.

According to reports, the Supreme Court has allowed a petition filed by Sony Entertainment. The court approved the transfer of Ilaiyaraaja’s case from the Madras High Court to the Bombay High Court. This decision aims to streamline the legal proceedings.

The dispute began in 2022 when Sony Entertainment filed a copyright suit. The company sought to restrain Ilaiyaraaja from using or sharing music recordings under its label. The case has continued to evolve since then.

Towards the end of last year, Ilaiyaraaja filed a counter petition against Sony Entertainment. He challenged the ownership claims over his compositions. He also sought removal of Sony Entertainment’s title from his works.

With cases filed in two different courts, there was a possibility of conflicting judgments. To avoid this, Sony Entertainment approached the Supreme Court. The request was to transfer the Madras High Court case to the Bombay High Court.

The court accepted this argument and approved the transfer. It noted that the original case filed by Sony Entertainment was already proceeding in Bombay. This move is expected to ensure a single and consistent judgment.

While such legal steps are common, reactions have been strong. Some observers feel Ilaiyaraaja is facing repeated challenges due to multiple copyright issues. Others believe the outcome will depend on how the case progresses.

The final verdict remains uncertain at this stage. The next hearings will be crucial in deciding the outcome. It will determine whether Ilaiyaraaja or Sony Entertainment gains the upper hand in this dispute.
