In a case where a husband filed for divorce alleging his wife never cooked got a shocker from the Supreme Court. With changing social norms and expectations, the concept of divorce has become very common.

Both men and women are seeking divorce for the flimsiest of the reasons. In this particular case, the Supreme Court was quite clear. It said – you didn’t marry a maid. Share work with her. The Court said times have changed and that the husbands must share work along with wife by cooking, washing and cleaning up.

In fact, a Trial Court granted divorce to the man for cruelty. But the Supreme Court pushed aside the ruling and said that he has to share chores with wife. The couple were married in 2017 and were separated in 2018. They have a 8-yr-old son.

The Supreme Court said the man’s allegations did not fall under cruelty. The Court ordered the couple to appear before it personally in April.

With both the man and woman working, the modern-day marriages wouldn’t survive if the couple did not share chores. The divorce rates have gone so high that the Supreme Court had to intervene in a social matter of great significance.

Of course, many millennial and Gen Z couples believe in having individual space inside a marriage. But the man must realize that he is not marrying a maid as noted by the Apex Court. Entering into a marriage comes with its share of responsibilities and the new generation needs to respect them.
