Jailer 2 AK-47 Ranabaali ticket hike
Ticket price hikes are back in the spotlight ahead of the Dasara 2026 box-office battle. Andhra Pradesh is reportedly allowing a Rs. 50 hike for three releases: Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, Venkatesh’s Aadarsha Kutumbam AK-47, and Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali. Telangana, meanwhile, is expected to continue with standard maximum ticket prices.
The decision raises a basic question: Why should medium-budget and dubbed films get the same ticket hike as big-budget blockbusters made on a massive scale?
Rajinikanth enjoys a huge following in Telugu states, but Jailer 2 is still a Tamil film dubbed into Telugu. Why should Telugu audiences pay extra to watch a dubbed film when tickets are already expensive?
The same question applies to medium-budget Telugu films. A hike for a big-budget Rajamouli or Prashanth Neel film may be understandable. But why should audiences pay more for a regular film made on a moderate budget? Why are makers in such a hurry to recover their investments through higher ticket prices? Are they not confident that their content will attract audiences?
Producers may argue that ticket hikes help them recover their investments faster. But why should audiences bear that burden? Is the industry exploiting Telugu audiences’ craze for cinema and taking them for granted?
Higher ticket prices do not guarantee bigger collections. If a film gets poor word of mouth, expensive tickets can keep families and casual moviegoers away. Instead of helping a film, a price hike can create resentment when the content fails to justify the cost.
With these three films expected to drive the Dasara box-office race, the industry needs to ask whether these hikes are justified or simply an attempt to collect more money upfront.
Audiences are willing to pay more for films that deliver value. But making ticket hikes routine, regardless of a film’s budget or demand, risks pushing ordinary moviegoers away from theatres.
