Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is one of the most anticipated Tamil films, but its North American premiere advance bookings are not yet matching the enormous expectations surrounding the sequel.
With just 11 days left for the premieres, the film has reportedly grossed around $252,180.
While the Tamil version is trending at a level comparable to Coolie at a similar stage, the Telugu version is moving slowly. The current numbers are not disastrous, but they look underwhelming for one of the biggest sequels in Tamil cinema, starring Rajinikanth.
The first Jailer was a sensational blockbuster, collecting around Rs. 600 crores worldwide. Given that Jailer 2 is a sequel arriving nearly three years later, the anticipation should ideally be much stronger, with advance bookings reflecting the franchise’s popularity.
However, the promotions have not generated the expected impact so far. The songs and promotional assets have received a mixed response, and the makers now need to create stronger excitement as the release approaches.
The stakes are particularly high because Jailer 2 is seen as the last and biggest hope for Tamil cinema to chase the Rs. 1000 crores worldwide gross milestone. Reaching that figure would require exceptional business across Tamil Nadu, the Telugu states and overseas markets, particularly North America. Rajinikanth remains a huge attraction in these territories, but the sequel must convert that star power into ticket sales.
Eleven days remain, so a pickup is certainly possible, especially if the trailer, promotions and audience response to the final promotional assets generate fresh momentum.
For now, Jailer 2 is showing decent signs in its Tamil version, but the overall trend does not yet justify the massive expectations surrounding it.
Rajinikanth has the star power, and the franchise has the brand value. The question is whether Jailer 2 can build enough momentum to turn those advantages into a Rs. 1000 crores box-office run.
