Jailer 2’s 1000 Crore Dream Crashed: Who Is to Blame?

Rajinikanth‘s most anticipated sequel Jailer 2 directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, was released in theatres on October 15th and has gone on a rampage at the box office.

According to reports, as of now, Jailer 2 has collected more than 690 crores worldwide and many trade experts predict that Jailer 2 might end its theatrical run by collecting around 800-850 crores.

Since the announcement of Jailer 2, many people believed that Jailer 2 would emerge as the first 1000 crore film of Kollywood, considering the sequel hype and the massive star cast. However, due to certain reasons, Jailer 2 has not been able to touch that dream mark and it seems like the Kollywood industry’s wait for a 1000-crore film will continue.

While some Kollywood trackers suggested that only because the makers of Jailer 2 did not release the film in North Indian multiplexes, Jailer 2 could not achieve that dream 1000-crore figure, there are also other reasons, feel Kollywood critics.

First, analyzing the trackers’ point of view: by pointing to the record-breaking collections of Jailer 2 in Kerala, Karnataka, overseas and the Telugu version of the film, trackers have claimed that solely because of the North Indian multiplex issue, Jailer 2 is ending its theatrical run with 800–850 crores.

They note that all the previous 1000-crore grossing films performed really well in North Indian markets. Hence, they claim that without at least 200 crores from the North Indian market, no film in Indian cinema could achieve the 1000-crore mark, and this is the factor that destroyed Jailer 2’s chance of achieving a 1000-crore collection.

Whereas critics suggest that the weak second half of Jailer 2 is the major reason for the film completing its theatrical run without touching the dream figure. They suggest that, due to the poor second half, there hasn’t been a repeat audience for the film, which is why Jailer 2 has failed to achieve the dream mark.

Also, they claim that if the second half of Jailer 2 had matched the first half of the film, then without any doubt, Jailer 2 would have become the first 1000-crore grosser of Kollywood and they feel only because of this, after the first weekend, the collections of Jailer 2 dipped.

Nevertheless, Jailer 2 is on its way to emerge as the new Industry Hit of Kollywood, surpassing 2.0 and it has already become the highest-grossing Tamil film in Kerala, Karnataka and overseas.

However, Jailer 2 still has a 10 day clear run, as the Diwali special releases are hitting the screens only on November 5th. Therefore, it remains to be seen what numbers Jailer 2 will post in its final run.
