Kanguva: How Did Audiences Sense It Way Ahead?

Ambitious pan-India high-budget film Kanguva from the Tamil industry, which the producer claimed would be a bigger hit than Baahubali 2 and could even touch 2000 crores (not just 1000 crores), opened to extremely negative reviews all over.

Whenever there is an event film, especially from the Telugu industry (like Salaar, Kalki 2898 AD, Devara), the anticipation is usually very high.

Event films or large-scale films get immediate attention, and even with average content, they become money spinners, as seen with these Telugu pan-India films.

But for Kanguva, despite having a star like Suriya in a different getup that looked good, with no trolls and a unique setup from the start, the film failed to excite the audience.

This stands in stark contrast to the response to Tollywood Tier 1 star heroes’ pan-India films.

Kanguva failed even before the first show, with North American presales barely touching $100K, despite the U.S. distributor opening bookings much in advance. The opening was also poor in India.

Now the result is out, and the film has received a similar response to Indian 2, though the content isn’t as bad as Shankar’s Indian 2.

Now, the million-dollar question is: how did the audience didn’t get excited despite the huge scale, making, and tall claims by the makers and Suriya?

How did they sense that there is something wrong with this film that they didn’t even bother to give it a respectable opening even in their local Tamil markets.

DSP’s music could be one reason why the film didn’t generate much buzz. However, the visual elements were there in the teaser and two trailers. Still, audiences took the film lightly and didn’t turn up to theaters for the first show.

Suriya’s market decline could be a factor, but it seems the audience had already smelled the result of a scale film like Kanguva much ahead.

They didn’t flock to the theaters for the first day first show like other pan-India period films made on a huge scale and span, despite all the hype.

Maybe that’s why they say Janta Janardhan hai!
