Karuppu starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan has emerged as a success at the box office. Directed by RJ Balaji, the film reportedly grossed over Rs. 120 crores worldwide during its opening weekend, performing strongly across Tamil Nadu but not so great in Telugu markets.
The film’s success has come as a major relief for Suriya, who was desperately looking for a strong theatrical comeback after a difficult phase at the box office. Trade analysts say Karuppu has managed to attract both family audiences and mass viewers despite receiving mixed response from critics.
However, amid the successful run, the film has now landed in controversy because of a satirical dialogue referencing legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja and his well-known copyright-related legal stance.
The particular scene quickly triggered backlash online, with several fans accusing the makers of indirectly mocking Ilaiyaraaja and making fun of the veteran musician’s strict approach toward copyright protection of his compositions.
As backlash started spreading across social media, Dream Warrior Pictures issued an official clarification.
In their statement, the makers expressed deep respect and admiration for Ilaiyaraaja and clarified that the dialogue was never intended to insult or disrespect him personally. They further stated that the controversial portion would either be removed or modified in future versions of the film to avoid hurting sentiments.
The incident has once again highlighted how sensitive references involving legendary artists have become in today’s social media environment, where even brief satirical lines can quickly snowball into large controversies.
Interestingly, while the controversy unfolds, Ilaiyaraaja has now officially signed on to compose music for Karthik Subbaraj’s upcoming film.
