The stage is set for the theatrical arrival of Pushpa 2 in under three weeks from now and the discussions about the box office projections of the film are underway.
One of the many box office-related discussions pertaining to Pushpa 2 is regarding the Kerala box office prospects of the film. This is a result of Allu Arjun’s established market in the Kerala belt and increased penetration of the Pushpa franchise.
To put things in perspective, Pushpa 1 reportedly opened with a meager Rs 1.2 crore gross in the Kerala market which is an understandably ordinary number. But the openings of the second part are expected and projected to be multiple times bigger.
If we look at the standing box office records, Vijay’s Leo is the biggest non-Malayalam opener in Kerala thus far. It grossed Rs 12 crores on its opening day there.
Can Leo’s Rs 12 crore be an earmark for Pushpa 2 in the Kerala belt? If so, then Pushpa 2 must open 10 times better than the first part did, which is insane in itself.
Though it is a fact that Bunny has upscaled his Malayalam market, is it enough to register a Rs 10+ crore opening? The chances are shaky. A lot will depend on the buzz that is built in the last week and the trailer that is coming out tomorrow.
