The Tollywood box office saw some minor reprieve with the arrival of dubbed film Maharaja which has Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role. The supposed action thriller had a fine run at the box office in its opening weekend.
Reportedly, this film grossed in the range of Rs 5 crore in the opening weekend which is an extremely good number for a dubbed film in the current low-lying Tollywood market. This will provide some minor relief to the Telugu box office.
But all the focus for now is on the big fish that is arriving in theaters on the 27th of this month, Kalki. This mega sci-fi thriller which is touted to be one of the costliest projects ever in Indian cinema is set for a grand theatrical debut on the mentioned date.
Kalki is expected to bring back the cinema-going culture of the Telugu audience and this is pretty much the need of the hour now. Tollywood is badly in need of a big-money grosser that reignites the Telugu cinema-going culture.
A big-ticket spectacle is needed for Tollywood at the moment and Kalki is promising just that.
There are questions if Kalki can be a Rs 1000 crore box office grosser, given its scale and premise. For now, the promotions have been blowing hot and cold, so the chance of Rs 1000 crore gross will entirely depend on the quality of the product.
