
Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning comes with the weight of a franchise and Tom Cruise, but can’t justify its own existence. The first half is a slog of exposition and build up that even the most die-hard fans will find themselves checking their watches.
It’s like the filmmakers are asking you to fast for a movie and then reward you with action later. The payoff is visually impressive but feels late and unearned.
The much-hyped submarine and plane sequences in the second half are cool, Cruise is still doing his own stunts at an age when most actors would be taking a nap.
These are fleeting reminders of what made the movie great. But the film’s reliance on nostalgia and rehashing old set pieces means it doesn’t break new ground.
Despite the blockbuster ambitions, Final Reckoning feels like a tribute to itself rather than a new chapter. The pacing issues and lack of innovation make it a tough watch especially compared to the earlier, tighter films in the series.
