Peddi Gets Court Protection: Enough to Save BO Collections?

With piracy continuing to create major problems for the film industry, the makers of Peddi have now taken an important legal step even before the movie’s theatrical release.

According to reports, the Madras High Court has granted an anti-piracy injunction in favor of Ram Charan’s upcoming film Peddi. The order aims to prevent illegal online leaks and unauthorized circulation of the film after release.

The legal protection came after the production house approached the court seeking copyright protection for the movie’s content. After hearing the petition, the vacation bench of the Madras High Court reportedly issued interim orders restraining unauthorized uploading, copying, sharing, streaming, recording, or distribution of the film across websites and digital platforms.

In simple terms, the court has issued a legal warning against piracy websites and unauthorized platforms from leaking or circulating Peddi online. The court reportedly observed that any illegal leak could cause huge financial losses to producers, distributors, and everyone connected to the film financially.

An anti-piracy injunction acts as legal protection for filmmakers, allowing authorities to block piracy websites and take action against illegal sharing of copyrighted content. Courts now also use “dynamic injunctions,” which allow authorities to continuously block newly created mirror sites and duplicate domains linked to the same pirated content without filmmakers repeatedly returning to court.

Piracy has become a major threat to Indian cinema, with several films suffering after HD prints leaked online within hours of release. Trade analysts believe such preventive legal measures are now essential for big-budget pan-India films like Peddi, where opening-weekend theatrical collections are extremely crucial.

However, despite laws and injunctions, piracy prints still emerge on the first day itself and get watched in large numbers. Most of the time, the prints are not HD, which somewhat helps theatrical business. But if HD versions leak early, theatrical revenue can reportedly get hurt by more than 50%.

Peddi is scheduled for a grand theatrical release on June 4.
