Music Maestro sues director Shankar

Legendary musician Maestro Ilayaraja has sent legal notice through court to direct Shankar. The musician is upset that one of his compositions has been remixed without his permission in a film produced by director Shankar.

Shankar who makes big budget blockbuster movies is simultaneously known to produce small scale movies or acquires them if he feels they deserve a platform to be seen. One such film that he took over as producer was a film called Kappal and it is this film that has landed him in trouble. An old Ilayaraja composed song has been remixed in the film without paying any rights to the composer.

Whenever an old song is reused in any form in any medium, the person or production house using must pay the royalties to the musician or the music label. Has the makers paid the royalties to the label and kept the musician in the dark? We will know the truth only when Shankar gives his reply as a case has been filed against him.
