Swayambhu: Nikhil’s Costliest Film Under OTT Pressure

Actor Nikhil grew step by step by working in small films and even indie films like Hyderabad Nawabs during the 2000s and slowly moved forward in his career. Each movie helped him grow steadily. His film Karthikeya 2 significantly increased his market range and proved that even medium budget films can succeed with him as the lead actor at a pan India level. Because of that success, the makers decided to invest heavily in his new film Swayambhu, and reports say the budget has reached nearly Rs. 80 crores.

This budget creates a big risk for Nikhil and the producers. The current OTT market situation looks very weak. OTT platforms no longer buy films blindly. They first watch the final output and then decide. To recover such a large budget, the film must secure a strong OTT deal. However, Swayambhu has not yet closed any OTT agreement, according to reports on social media. OTT platforms plan to watch the final output after the VFX work finishes. Only then will they decide whether to purchase the film. Because of this, the OTT deal will take more time to finalize.

However, the teaser released today looks promising. It justifies why the team spent such a huge amount on the film. The visuals look impressive, and the 3D effects appear well executed. The film will also release during the summer season, which usually attracts good footfalls in theatres. If the producers manage to close the OTT deal early, they will feel more secure financially. If OTT recovers at least half of the budget, the rest can come from theatrical collections.

Then the breakeven target for the theatrical business would be around Rs. 40-45 crores distributor share, according to trade experts. This will still be tough for the film, but not impossible if it manages to get solid word of mouth.

Since Karthikeya 2 performed very well at the box office, the producers remain confident. The team plans to complete the first copy by March and release the film in April.
