One Month of Theaters Openings, Average Occupancy at Abysmally Low 3-5%

It has been exactly one month ever since the Central Government had allowed the cinema theaters across the country to re-open with 50% occupancy. The decision to re-open was left to the states which mean there is no uniformity in the re-opening.

Some states including Telangana did not allow the cinemas to open yet. In a few states like Andhra Pradesh, the theaters themselves did not volunteer to open despite the local Governments allowing. If we consider the states where the theaters opened, the occupancy is pathetic, to say the least.

The average occupancy across the country is around 3%-5% which does not even recover the cleaning charges of the facilities. Some of the plexes who batted for re-opening as early as possible have closed some of their properties till things get better. A couple of small Tamil films released in Tamil Nadu, the other day but to of no use.

The exhibition sector now needs the help of the filmmakers more than ever. Only the flow of fresh content and control over the virus can improve Box Office. The vaccine coming is not in anybody’s hand but the filmmakers should take a bit of risk and line up new content so as to tempt the audience to come to the theaters.
