OTT Giants Competing For IPL Streaming Rights

Disney+ Hotstar has the streaming rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in India. The rights are the main reason for Hotstar’s popularity in India. Meanwhile, BCCI is gearing up for the auction of the TV and streaming rights of the IPL for the next five years.

Taking a cue from Hotstar, OTT giants – Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are vying for the rights of IPL. Amazon has partnered with Sony to bid for the TV and streaming rights. Amazon is already streaming some of the popular sporting events across the globe.

Both the parties together reportedly had bid for 11,050 Crore. Meanwhile, Netflix reportedly is bidding for the rights independently. If it wins, the OTT major will be into live streaming for the first time anywhere in the world. It has to be seen who will emerge as the winner in this tussle.

IPL streaming rights are the biggest asset of Hotstar until now. If Hotstar loses its rights, it is not easy for the OTT major to sustain itself in Indian markets.
