Pan-India Directors: Sukumar Slightly Behind Neel, On Par Atlee

Pushpa 2 has emerged as a mammoth blockbuster. It can be compared to Baahubali 2 in terms of the sensation it is creating at the box office.

Allu Arjun has established himself as one of the biggest crowd-pullers of all time with Pushpa 2. His character, his mannerisms, and his swag are the talk of the town.

He is getting the lion’s share of credit for the film’s success, especially in the Hindi belt.

But what about the director Sukumar, who has designed and directed Pushpa? Pushpa 1 gave him some recognition, but Sukumar didn’t become popular as a pan-India director.

So, after Pushpa 2’s success, where does he stand in the league of pan-India directors?

To make things clear, even though Pushpa 2 will do more business than RRR or Animal, Sukumar is nowhere near the league of SS Rajamouli and Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Their brand value is on an altogether different level.

Nevertheless, Sukumar’s name is being heard a lot right now after Pushpa 2. He is getting the due credit for elevating Allu Arjun’s character and designing the mass action blocks in the film.

His interesting narration with the engaging screenplay is being praised. His handling of dramatic, emotional, comic, and action scenes is getting a lot of love from audiences.

He is getting acclaim for handling such a huge project with such massive expectations with aplomb and delivering a film that made a lot of audiences happy.

The distributors are also happy that finally, Indian cinema has another director who understands the pulse of the audience in tier-2 and tier-3 towns and cities.

Some people are also discovering Sukumar’s earlier gems like Rangasthalam and appreciating his talent.

Right now, Sukumar has attained good recognition and popularity that can be compared to the likes of Prashanth Neel, though Prashanth has an edge because of his world-building skills and ability to elevate the hero to a god-level status. But Sukumar has passed with flying colors as a pan-India director.

There was a fear that Sukumar would end up like Koratala Siva, who didn’t gain any name or fame for Devara. His name was a complete washout, and no one even talked about him after Devara’s release.

Sukumar has definitely gone miles and leaps ahead of Koratala Siva.

Just like Atlee, who is also considered a good pan-India director who understands mass commercial cinema, Sukumar has also joined the list of directors whose future films will be keenly looked forward to and expected to make a huge mark at the box office.
