Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan and directed by Sudha Kongara, released in theatres on January 14th. The film received mixed reactions from both audiences and critics. Early buzz soon turned into concern.
Originally, the project was planned as Purananooru with Suriya in the lead. Due to certain circumstances, Suriya exited the film. The project was later reworked and renamed Parasakthi, with Sivakarthikeyan stepping in.
Despite a strong opening, the film failed to maintain momentum. Parasakthi reportedly collected over 27 crores on Day 1. However, weak word of mouth led to a sharp drop, especially in B and C centres.
As collections dipped, the film began heading toward a washout status in several regions. This disappointing performance triggered intense debate across social media platforms. Viewers and trade circles began analysing the reasons behind the setback.
Many critics believe Sudha Kongara’s screenplay played a major role in the film’s failure. They pointed out frequent lags and narrative dips. Some also felt the film drifted away from its core anti-Hindi agitation theme.
According to these viewers, the film leaned more toward a gangster drama. This tonal shift disappointed those expecting a politically rooted story. The deviation impacted audience engagement.
On the other hand, industry trackers claim the script underwent major changes after Purananooru was shelved. The story was reportedly rewritten to suit Sivakarthikeyan’s image. A love track and mass moments were added during this process.
The original plan was to highlight the struggles of the Purananooru army during the anti-Hindi movement. That focus was diluted in the final version. This creative shift continues to divide opinions.
With poor reviews and declining footfalls, Sivakarthikeyan’s milestone 25th film is now struggling to survive in theatres. The coming days will determine whether Parasakthi can recover costs. Achieving the break-even mark remains uncertain.
