M9 News journalist Nishant sat down with director Praveen Kandregula, who carved a niche audience with Cinema Bandi and Subham. His third film, Parada, is set to release on August 22nd, and expectations are high among cine lovers.
Speaking about Parada, Praveen said he tried to address multiple themes. The film touches on women’s issues, village superstitions, and even a devotional layer. Without revealing too much, he expressed confidence that audiences will connect with it.
When asked about reviews, especially with Anupama Parameswaran stressing that they cannot afford to buy them, Praveen shared his views. He said he is unaware of any “money factor” in reviews and believes most are genuine opinions.
He added that reviews play a crucial role today as films exit theatres quickly. Early reviews inform audiences whether to watch or skip, and filmmakers must accept both praise and criticism. According to him, reviews are unavoidable in the current cinema climate.
Praveen also discussed how commercial cinema influenced him. He disagreed with independent filmmakers treating their work as superior to mainstream projects, saying such attitudes may come from film institutes. For him, money matters more than awards.
He also wished big stars would speak up more about small films on social media, as their support could help independent projects reach wider audiences. This, he believes, is more impactful than industry recognition.
Praveen offered advice to struggling independent filmmakers too. He touched on the minimum budget required to make a film and how aspiring directors can secure their first opportunity in the industry. Watch the full interview for more insights.
