Trailer Talk: Better Suited For OTT?

Keerthy Suresh is gearing up for her upcoming movie Raghu Thatha, set for release in theaters on Independence Day. The makers recently shared the trailer on social media, generating buzz ahead of the premiere.

Raghu Thatha features Keerthy in the role of Kayalvizhi, a bold character who challenges societal norms and the imposition of Hindi.

The trailer introduces Keerthy’s character as someone who defies traditional expectations, portraying her as a strong and outspoken police cadet who stands up to societal pressures, including questions about marriage.

The film seems genuine and well-intentioned, with dollops of humor and commendable performances from the entire cast. However, the scale, setting, and overall concept give it more of an OTT feel.

In recent times, such films have found greater success on digital platforms rather than in theaters. These types of movies, while often rich in content and character-driven narratives, tend to resonate more with audiences who prefer watching from the comfort of their homes.

Raghu Thatha falls into the same genre as films like Laapata Ladies, which struggled to draw crowds to theaters but received substantial appreciation upon their release on OTT platforms.

It will be intriguing to see if Keerthy Suresh can defy this trend and attract audiences to the theaters with Raghu Thatha, a message-oriented period comedy film.

Her star power, combined with the film’s unique premise and the backing of a big banner like Hombale Films, might entice moviegoers to experience it on the big screen.

Raghu Thatha will face competition from several high-profile releases on August 15, including Chiyaan Vikram’s Thangalaan, Ravi Teja’s Mr. Bachchan, and the horror-comedy Demonte Colony 2.

Produced by Hombale Films, the same banner behind the successful KGF series, Raghu Thatha marks its debut in Tamil cinema.

Directed by Suman Kumar, known for his work on Hindi web series like Farzi and Guns & Gulaabs, the film boasts a diverse cast featuring Devadarshini, Rajeev Ravindranathan, Anandsami, Rajesh Balachandran, Aadhira Pandilakshmi, and Manoj Kumar Kalaivanan, among others.
