Ram Gopal Varma has once again raised a disturbing question about AI. And this time, his warning goes far beyond people losing their jobs.
In his latest post, RGV says the first jobs to disappear will belong to those who refuse to embrace AI. But he then looks at the bigger picture. Technology has always been built to make life easier, remove physical hardship and save us from mundane work. Humans have always wanted more free time. With AI, that wish could finally come true.
But RGV sees a catch.
He says humans essentially had two assets, muscle to perform tasks and a mind to think and create. The Industrial Revolution started replacing physical labour. Now AI is coming for the second one.
That is what makes his warning unsettling. What happens when machines can do the work, think through problems and even create for us? We may finally get the freedom we always wanted, but at the cost of losing the very things that gave us purpose.
RGV ends his post by invoking The Monkey’s Paw: “Beware of what you wish for… it might come true.”
He may be talking about AI, but the question is much bigger. If AI eventually takes away both our muscle and our mind, what exactly will be left for humans to do?
