Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s production Romanchakam is now heading to OTT after a disappointing theatrical run. The film, which released on September 3, received extremely mixed reviews and failed to create the kind of impact expected from a project associated with Vanga’s production house.
Romanchakam had a few comedy gags that worked here and there. But beyond those moments, many viewers felt that the film had very little fresh to offer.
The hero characterization was one of the major complaints. The heroine’s character was also considered half-baked, while the tension created around her felt forced. The writing and treatment were other major weak points.
The film also attracted more negativity after producer Pranay Reddy Vanga made a strong statement following its release. He reportedly said that because Romanchakam was a small film, some people were successful in destroying it. He then questioned what would happen when Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Prabhas’ Spirit releases.
Once a film starts getting attention for controversies and statements rather than its content, recovering from that perception becomes difficult.
Now, Romanchakam is getting another opportunity.
The film is set to premiere on Netflix from October 1. Some films that fail in theatres find appreciation on OTT platforms, especially when viewers discover them casually.
The OTT audience will be able to watch Romanchakam without the theatrical hype, and that could work either way. Some viewers may find the comedy more enjoyable at home. Others may notice the writing problems and weak characterizations even more clearly.
The big question is simple: Will Netflix viewers give Romanchakam a better verdict, or will the OTT audience also reject it after discovering the same flaws?
October 1 will provide the answer.
