Producer Pranay Reddy Vanga, brother of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has spoken strongly against the growing culture of exaggerated box-office numbers in Tollywood. Speaking at the success meet of his latest production Romanchakam, Pranay made it clear that he does not support inflating collections through posters and publicity.
While discussing exaggerated collection posters, Pranay said, “I have never done it. I won’t do it.” His comments have attracted attention because inflated box-office posters have become common in film promotions. Whenever a film gets a strong opening, huge numbers are often announced within hours, sometimes making the film look much bigger than its actual theatrical performance.
Pranay believes this practice can eventually hurt the market of the hero, director and technicians involved in the film. A production house may get short-term publicity by showing inflated figures, but the actual market of the people involved will eventually be tested. When the real numbers do not match the promoted image, the damage can be much bigger.
He also pointed to another major problem in Tollywood: uncontrolled budgets. According to Pranay, many films are failing because their actual production costs go far beyond the budgets planned on paper. When a film becomes too expensive, even a decent theatrical run may not be enough to recover the investment.
Fake collection numbers can make this problem worse. If inflated figures create the impression that a hero or director has a much bigger market, the next film may be made with an even higher budget. This can create a dangerous cycle of rising costs and unrealistic expectations.
Pranay’s message is simple. A big number on a poster may create noise today, but it cannot change the actual business of a film.
In the end, the real box office will always reveal the truth.
