The Rashmika Effect: Is Rukmini Vasanth Next in Line?

Actresses from the Kannada film industry have traditionally enjoyed high popularity in Telugu cinema. A textbook example of this trend is Rashmika Mandanna.

Though Rashmika began her career in Kannada cinema, her popularity multiplied after she entered Telugu films. It was Tollywood that gave her consistent visibility and back-to-back big opportunities, eventually turning her into a pan India star. As her Telugu career took off in a big way, Rashmika naturally began giving more importance to Telugu projects over Kannada films.

However, this shift did not sit well with a section of Kannada audiences. Rashmika faced heavy backlash for allegedly neglecting Kannada cinema, opting out of projects citing date issues, and not publicly supporting films by stars like Rishab Shetty and Rakshit Shetty. Despite the trolling, she chose not to dwell on the negativity and continued focusing on her career growth.

Now, a similar conversation is emerging around Rukmini Vasanth. She gained widespread recognition with Sapta Sagaralu Daati, which also helped her build a decent following among Telugu audiences. Although her Telugu debut with Nikhil Siddhartha flopped badly, her career momentum did not get affected.

Rukmini’s powerful portrayal of Kanakavathi in Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 elevated her stature in Kannada cinema. Adding to that, she is now part of the highly anticipated project Dragon starring Jr. NTR and directed by Prashanth Neel. This project has sharply increased her demand in Telugu cinema.

At this stage, many are wondering whether Rukmini, like Rashmika before her, will start prioritizing Telugu films over Kannada. The question is understandable. Telugu cinema currently offers better remuneration, better reach, and actresses who establish themselves in Tollywood often attract attention from Hindi filmmakers as well.

For many South Indian heroines, Tollywood has become the fastest route to nationwide recognition and long-term career growth. So, blaming Rukmini for her career decisions is wrong on many levels.
