A long-running property dispute involving late actress Sridevi’s family has now reached the Supreme Court. The court has issued notices to producer Boney Kapoor and his daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor over a 2.70-acre property in Chennai.
The land is located in Sholinganallur, near Chennai’s East Coast Road. Sridevi, along with her mother and sister, bought the property in 1988.
Two people, M.C. Sivakami and M.C. Natarajan, are now claiming a share in the property. They have challenged the documents related to the land purchase and want the case to be considered again.
Earlier this year, the Madras High Court rejected their case. The court said they had taken too long to challenge the 1988 property transactions. It also said they had not shown a strong enough legal basis for their claim.
The petitioners then approached the Supreme Court. The top court has now issued notices to the Kapoor family and asked them to respond.
The Supreme Court has also ordered both sides to maintain the current status of the property until the next hearing. In simple terms, no major change should be made to the property while the case is pending.
The court has also suggested that both sides try to settle the dispute through mediation. A retired High Court judge could oversee the process.
The case will come up again on December 18.
Importantly, this is not a final ruling against Boney Kapoor, Janhvi or Khushi. The Supreme Court has only agreed to hear the matter and has kept the property status unchanged for now.
The future of the disputed land will depend on what happens during the next stages of the case and the proposed mediation.
