Suriya’s Dream Project Postponed: Director Scared?

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has not released a film in the last five years. He recently revealed in an interview that he is working on an ambitious project based on Karna from the Mahabharata, which has been in development for several years.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra said he spent six years understanding the concept and felt the need to return to Vyasa’s original text. He explained that the script is still being developed, though the project will soon go on floors. A.R. Rahman has already composed six songs.

Earlier reports claimed that Tamil star Suriya would play the lead role in the film. It is still unclear whether the project will be bilingual. Many online users expect a pan-India release with a Hindi dubbed version.

However, a section of netizens has raised doubts about Suriya’s casting. They pointed to his box office performance after the pandemic. With a reported budget of Rs. 350 crores, users cited the failure of Kanguva and questioned recovery prospects.

Some believe Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra delayed the project after assessing collections of Suriya’s recent films. A few suggested that the film should proceed with Suriya only if made on a controlled budget to reduce financial risk.

Others also noted that Rakeysh has not delivered a major hit after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. They feel his films appeal to a limited audience rather than the masses. Despite the update raising expectations, uncertainty around further delays remains.
